Thanks for your interest Corrie. I don’t have Jane’s birth certificate. As I say in the blog most of my information about Jane’s birth was obtained from Dot Clayworth, research and liaison officer of Singleton Family History Society. She did show me the entry in the index and if you contact her she may have more information that will help you. Have you tried the Australian birth index on line?

I was wondering if you found Jane’s Dines birth certificate because I can’t seem too. I have Isobella’s Richard and Elizabeth’s daughter and it mention previous issue as one girl….I assume Jane. I would love to get Jane’s birth certicate.

Hi Mavis. I found the reference to Richard Dines employing only Aboriginal people in an article written by Mark Copland from Griffith University titled ‘The Native Police at Callandoon – Blueprint for Forced Assimilation’. The referencing he gave is ‘Annual Report Darling Downs District on Aboriginals. 1851 (State Archives, 4/7153). Hope this helps.

Hi Mavis.
I can’t begin to tell you how useful your blog is! I was beginning to get very down hearted with so many dead ends however your blog has given me new hope of finding answers to my questions.
I have full details of the report at work and will forward the details to you on Monday. I thought I had brought my file home with me to look at during the school holidays but unfortunately I left it at work.

I have heard also that Richard employed many aboriginals so I will be interested in seeing which Aboriginal report it is so that I can read more. Lovely to get follow-ups as it shows that the blog is serving a useful purpose.

Hi Corrie and Mavis.
This is getting very exciting! Did you know Richard Dines owned two properties in the Goondiwindi area? Merriwa Station and Toomelah Station. James Francis (Jane’s husband) was also a station hand at Merriwa. This is where Eva Francis was born. I found some interesting information from a government Aboriginal report that states that Richard Dines only employed Aboriginal people. I have left most of my information at work however when I retturn on Monday I will have a look through everything and see if I can find any more information..

Interesting that George buys Aboriginal mare 52 guineas. Aboriginal people were still counted as livestock at this stage.
